Dear 6th Grade Parents: Welcome to our web page!! We will be adding new photos as the year goes on so keep checking back to see what your child is doing in our class. Photos and the weekly schedule are at the bottom of this page so be sure to scroll down to see them! Please check out our Proquest site on our Home page @ www.cusick.wednet.edu under Staff Resources. This is a great research site for our students. Listed below is the user name and password you need to enter. Proquest user name: 80-74512 Welcome to 6th grade web page and another wonderful school year! There are several new and exciting changes in our building this year that I would like to make you aware of. First, we welcome our new kindergarten teacher Mrs. Koesel! She moved on down a few doors from the Title 1 room to our fearless kindergarten leader. Mrs. Krizanic (Mrs. Clary now!) has joined us as a full time teacher in the 1st grade. Mrs. Larson decided to enjoy some retirement years and we already miss her smiling face! Our math and reading program is off to a positive start. Students have been placed in classrooms to meet their learning needs based on a leveled learning model. The 4th, 5th, and 6th grades have met several times to ensure the process goes as smooth and easy on our students as possible. We will all use the same grading system, daily rubrics and homework record sheets. We have discussed homework and have worked out a balance in order to prevent an overload on your student. If this does become a problem with your student, please let us know! Students will have homework in math every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. There is NO homework on Fridays! For reading: The students WILL have 30 minutes over 5 nights/week required for reading out of chapter books. At this age I have found reading in bed before they go to sleep is a great way to wind down the day and forms a habit of daily reading (definitely not a requirement!). On Fridays, they will receive new spelling & vocabulary words to study. Tuesdays they should have homework with their words and will test on Thursdays. Occasionally students will bring home a project from their reading class to work on, but for the most part projects will be done in class. Homework sheets should be coming home to be signed on every Thursday night. You can access your student’s grades, attendance, and any missing assignments through our school’s Family Access. Log into the site at www.cusick.wednet.edu and click on Family Access. If you do not have a login and password, please contact the school at 445-1125 to obtain one. The site is a wonderful way to keep tabs on your student’s daily work and grades. There is also a link for e-mailing the teachers. This is usually the best form of contact since we check our mail at least once a day. Of course, you are always welcome to visit the classroom too! As you may have heard, our class does not have 3rd recess. Please try to send your child with a water bottle as these can become long afternoons. With the long math and reading blocks, our afternoon schedule does not allow enough time to cover each subject to the degree we need to before entering Jr. High. Once in the Jr. High, students receive a lunch break and a 15 minute nutrition break. By eliminating the last recess we will gain more learning time and prepare for the daily schedule next year. Snacks are a HUGE deal for this age level. Please try to send a snack at least once a month that can be shared by the entire class; we have 24 students. Drinks need to be of clear liquid as colored drinks are not allowed on the carpeted area. Soda pops are strongly discouraged. Please know that you are always welcome in the classroom or to join your student for lunch; our lunch is from 11:30-noon. I welcome any questions or concerns you may have. Please feel free to e-mail, call, or stop in to visit with me. I try to be at the classroom by 7:15 am and am usually in the building until at least 4pm. I'm excited about our year and look forward to working with you and your student.
